Item Description: This postcard features a reproduction of Richmond Barthé’s Stevedore (1937).
Stevedore depicts a dock worker who had to load and unload cargo onto ships, which was a common position given to African American men when they served in World War I and World War II. Commonly seen as a low-ranking position, Barthé shows the pride and integrity that these men had, despite them not always having been seen as valid or capable of greater positions in the military.
