What can I expect during my first year of a Ph.D. program? - See more at: http://blogs.ams.org/mathmentoringne
by Ricardo Cortez I wanted to write directly to those students who are about to start graduate school in the fall and to those who are in their first year of graduate work. The transition to graduate school involves so many changes at once, that it can become overwhelming at times. We usually move to a new part of the country; we have to make new friends; we have to realize what study habits are inadequate and what to do about it; we have to identify academic background areas that we need to reinforce; and we have to find a rhythm. I decided not to preach about this. Instead, I asked 4 f...
Graduate School Admissions Interview: Dos and Don'ts
By Tara Kuther, Ph.D. If you have been asked to come in for an admissions interview, congratulations! You're one step closer to being accepted into graduate school. The interview is the final evaluation stage in the graduate school application process. Come prepared and and you are more likely to leave a lasting positive impression on the interviewers. Remember that the purpose of the interview is to get to know the applicant beyond his or her paper application. This is your chance to distinguish yourself from the other applicants and show what makes you a better candidate. In other words...
4 Myths About Americans Earning Graduate Degrees Abroad
A U.S. degree isn't automatically better. Students don't necessarily have to know the local language to earn a graduate degree overseas. By Megan Lee Some American graduate-degree-seeking students dismiss studying abroad as a tenable alternative to attending a school in the U.S. Jaime Ortega, associate professor of management and MBA program director at Charles III University of Madrid, said via email that he finds students from the U.S. to have "much less information" about schools outside of the country. This lack of information can deter young adults from expanding their pro...
Does it make sense to get married during graduate school?
by Dora Farkas, PhD This question was posted a few weeks ago, and I could not resist addressing it in my blog, since I got engaged and married during graduate school . If I were to summarize my answer in one word it would be this: support. I know many students who got married (and a few who got divorced) in graduate school, and it all comes down to how well you and your spouse can support each other during this intense time. By support, I do not just mean financial assistance, although in graduate school many students rely on their spouses to pay for the basics, especially if they don’...
Graduate Certificate Programs Offer Quick Path to Career Upgrade
These credentials allow working professionals to develop specific skills or switch careers. By Christopher J. Gearon Mandi Martini of Cincinnati considered getting her MBA. Instead, the medical devices sales rep for Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, enrolled last fall in a 12-credit graduate certificate program in business foundations at the University of Cincinnati's Carl H. Lindner College of Business. Even though she earned a bachelor's in marketing from UC in 2009, "if you don't use it, you lose it," says Martini, 30. She views the extra helpings of accounting, fin...
Graduate students hurt by the Affordable Care Act
By Brandon Davis The IRS is penalizing universities for providing healthcare to student employees, and it’s hurting the very people the Affordable Care Act was supposed to help. In June Forbes reported that under new IRS regulations, starting in July 2015, small businesses and universities that reimburse employees healthcare premiums or pay their health costs directly will be fined up to $36,500 a year per employee. A penalty that is 18 times greater than the $2000.00 employer mandate. As a result, graduate students around the country are being told that they will no longer be provi...

Back to Engineering Graduate School: 10 must-haves
In this article I describe my favorite and must-have items for when I start my semesters in graduate school. A lot of what I list below can also be recommended for undergraduates. 1. Computer Engineers require reliable tools. A computer is at the top of the list, whether you’re writing a technical report at the last minute, sharing gigabytes of files with your group project partners, or downloading a semester’s worth of lecture notes before an exam. These situations commonly arise during the semester and it is wise to find a dependable computer to help you avoid technological pitfalls....
Should I Go To Graduate Student Conferences?
by Karen Today’s post is a Special Request post for Andy, and many other readers, who have asked, “Should I go to a graduate student conference?” The answer is, yes, once. And after that, no. The lines that “count” on your cv for tenure track jobs are lines that show significant peer review and competitiveness. The acceptance process for major national disciplinary conferences is peer reviewed and competitive. It is not so for most graduate student conferences. Graduate student conferences make it easy for graduate students to present, which certainly is a major part...
