Yahntaye Martin Senior, Mass Communications Major Parents: The late Larry and Joyce Martin of Millen, Georgia Goals: My aspirations are to further my education and pursue a career in broadcast journalism at a nationally-known station.
A Millen, Georgia native with an infectious smile is the new Miss Fort Valley State University. Yahntaye Martin is the daughter of the late Larry Martin and Mrs. Joyce Martin of Millen and is the eldest of three children. The senior mass communications major is a 2004 graduate of Jenkins County High School.
Martin was named Miss FVSU during a pageant in March. She was one of eight women selected to compete then earned a spot among the top three candidates. As a finalist, Martin campaigned for the honor. Her slogan, “New Day Startin’: Vote Yahntaye Martin,” caught students’ attention. The aspiring journalist brought home the title, winning more than fifty percent of the student popular vote. This year’s platform, “Empowering college students’ self esteem and s*xual health,” brings to the forefront topics Yahntaye deems important. “I feel that a lot of college students still struggle with these issues and need help with them because college is a life changing experience,” she said.
Martin says being queen is an honor in itself. “I enjoy being Miss Fort Valley State. It has given me the chance to inspire other young ladies,” she said.
Miss FVSU is just one of Martin’s extracurricular activities at the university. She is also a reporter for WFVS-TV 21, the student-produced newscast, and is currently working on a documentary about FVSU that features former queens. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, writing and going out with friends.
