Regional HBCUs took part in game celebrating Jackie Robinson (1132 hits)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A couple of historically black college and universities took the lead in celebrating Jackie Robinson Wednesday.

At the Reds Youth Academy, Wilberforce University and Kentucky State University played in the 2023 Joe Morgan HBCU Classic.

Both teams got to wear authentic Negro League jerseys.

For KSU's Solomon Reed, this was a very special homecoming game. He went to Princeton High School and played in the Reds' RBI League for ten years.

"Playing on the specific day like this with two HBCUs and my former coaches and being in the situation I’m in now it’s nothing but joy and happiness."

"It’s important to remember because Negro League baseball players contributed greatly to the greatness of baseball", said Michael Carter, Sr., Sinclair Community College. "So, it’s great to honor them and recognize them and remember them and it’s great that these young players are doing that."

Major League Baseball will celebrate Jackie Robinson Day on April 15. The Reds will host the Phillies.
