Check out this video from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia! American history has often omitted Black Americans' presence and contributions to the country's development and evolution. In this episode of Illuminated, Morehouse professors Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, Dr. Clarissa Myrick-Harris, and Dr. David Wall Rice discuss US history's omissions, how to recount the truth of America’s past more accurately using mediums such photography, fashion, architecture, film, and more as well as how Black Americans used these mediums to assert their individuality, dignity, and humanity in a world determined to belittle and eradicate them.
The panel also discusses how Morehouse and Spelman's recent collaboration with Polo Ralph Lauren corrects the legacy American fashion house's own representation of the "American Dream," while addressing the necessary duality of praise and critique of Black Americans' wide-ranging pursuits toward equity and freedom.
